Anyone who thinks AI agents are magic will never truly control them. This insight sounds simple. Its implications for any organization deploying AI in production are profound.

The Moment of Recognition

A Marc Andreessen podcast surfaced over the Easter break. One insight stood out immediately.

An AI agent is not magic. It is a language model, combined with a shell, a file system, and a loop.

That sounds almost disappointingly straightforward. No black box. No digital intelligence from another dimension. Just a system built from familiar components.

That is precisely the point.

Why Demystification Is Not a Step Backward

Most organizations do not fail at the technology itself. They fail because they treat AI as something unknowable. Something too complex to govern.

This mindset has a name: black-box thinking.

Black-box thinking is expensive. It produces projects without owners, systems without oversight, and risks without visibility.

Understanding AI agents as an engineering problem breaks this pattern. Not because AI is trivial. But because complexity is not a reason to abandon control.

What 'Engineering Problem' Actually Means

Roles, permissions, and logs are not bureaucracy. They are the prerequisites for serious production operation.

Make risks visible

Invisible risks cannot be managed. This is true for every technology. For AI agents, it is especially true.

What is the worst-case outcome this agent could trigger? What systems does it have access to? Which decisions does it make autonomously, and which does it escalate?

Asking these questions surfaces risks. That sounds uncomfortable. It is far better than the alternative: discovering risks only after they have materialized.

Iterate and measure

No agent is perfect at first deployment. Treating it as an engineering problem means planning for improvement.

Measurability means knowing how well the agent performs its function. Iteration means improving it without destabilizing the broader system.

That is the difference between a prototype and a product.

The Turning Point: Production Operations

AI enters regular operations when it stops being treated as an experiment.

This sounds obvious. The reality in many midsize organizations looks different. AI projects stay permanently in pilot mode. Not because the technology is immature. But because the organization is not yet ready for productive AI.

Readiness does not come from more demos. It comes from architecture, governance, and clear accountability.

Treating AI agents as an engineering problem creates exactly that readiness.

What This Means for CISOs and Decision-Makers

For decision-makers, the core reduces to three questions:

1. Who is accountable? Every AI agent in production needs a named owner. Not a team. A person.

2. What happens when it fails? This is not a fear question. It is a governance question. The answer must exist before the first production deployment.

3. How do we measure success? An agent whose performance nobody evaluates is not an asset. It is a risk.

These three questions have nothing to do with AI in the technical sense. They are classic risk management and business governance. That is exactly why they can be answered.

Conclusion: Control Is Not the Opposite of Innovation

The insight is not anti-innovation. It is precise.

Organizations that understand AI agents as controllable systems can invest more boldly. Not despite the control. Because of it.
